古代有所謂錯簡（古代以竹簡依次串聯而成書，竹簡的次序前後錯亂，稱為「錯簡」），亦有缺簡，缺了一頁就很難把全文呈現。宗師「黑虎偷心」手稿一直只存序及第二、三、四頁，首頁闕如。直至最近方發現混於另一宗匣。今重見天日，各頁合璧公諸於世。雖仍缺照片，然有基本訓練者當能按圖驥，隨之練習矣。

螳螂拳以快速見稱，所以一般套路直上直落。例如「白猿偷桃」全套只有24式，一氣呵成。當然螳螂拳也有向橫邊發展的，十八叟便有斜撤步，螳螂出洞有斜步進攻。躲剛、六合雙刀、梅花槍、春秋大刀「斬四門」等亦有斜向及橫向的，其他不勝枚舉。崩步第一式已是斜步補捶了。還有跨步、繞行步等。《螳螂拳術闡秘》便有介紹「四方八面打」。
平時練習就有「走步十六式」，其特色之便不是直線演練，用繞行步，故此又叫「走圈子」。在武館中，於上課之前，一班師兄弟經常一齊練習，十分熱鬧。首先設置一根柱，大家圍著練。當然也可以一個人練。它可以說是集合了螳螂拳的手法精華。不過可能由於比較長，而且屬於基本練習，很少見在各種場合中演出，流轉於是不廣，在網絡上基本上找不到。幸好當年有繒製一簡單的圖譜作紀錄，亦一直都有間中練習。幾年前覺得有需要把全套保留，於是花了兩年與楊志強詳細探研，不斷改進調整、精益求精，希望把這一套瀕臨失傳的「走步十六式」流傳於世。區區微誠，不為個人名聞利養。最終於最近攝錄圓滿，現已上載。
