傳說宋太祖趙匡胤發明大蟠龍棍（大掃子）和小蟠龍棍（小掃子：即類似今天的雙節棍）兩種，與現在雙節棍不同的地方是大掃子是一長一短、長的一截約為普通棍之三分二、短的一截約為普通棍之三分一，用雙手握長的部分。據聞用以破盾牌。小掃子長的一截更短一點，但不至於像雙節棍般長短一樣。 大掃子雙手握，小掃子單手握。
